There will be a full programme of social events at NALS, and delegates will be able to enjoy more than a glass of wine and a bottle of cider while greeting old and new acquaintances.

These activities are included in NALS registration fee. To help us organize it, please, send us an email to participate in case you did not check it when you registered: nals@nals2017.es

TUESDAY: WELCOME RECEPTION

All delegates are invited to the Welcome Party on Tuesday 12 December from 18:00 to 20:00 at Asturias Hall in the Congress Centre.

Smell, taste, feel the wine from Asturias. For those who like to know more about wine, Pablo Sampedro, a renown sommelier, will teach us how to sniff and swirl it. And we will have some practical lessons!

We are glad to have so many young researchers at NALS!

On Wednesday an evening cocktail will be offered to graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and other young researchers offering you the opportunity to interact among your peers in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

Not-so-young researchers are welcome to announce offers for positions, research stages or mentoring, and personally meet potential candidates from NALS.

THURSDAY: WHEN IN ROME, DO AS THE ROMANS DO

Cider, which the Romans discovered when they arrived here two thousand years ago, is more than just a drink: it is a way of getting fun, of socialising, and of sharing. Because cider is never drunk alone in Asturias.

A espicha is an informal buffet-style banquet held in a cider mill, usually organized to celebrate a family event or friends gathering, or … the Conference Dinner. Technically speaking, the word espicha refers to the action of opening a barrel for the first time by knocking an espita (spigot) into it. In popular culture, it is a traditional feast. Cider is served directly from the barrel, food is traditional and eaten up while standing and moving from group to group.

Dress code: informal. Meeting point: Abba Hotel Lobby at 19:30.

FRIDAY: CONFERENCE TOUR

Botanical Garden Gijón

On the final day, come with us to visit the Botanic Gardens and Laboral University. Just five minutes bus ride from the Congress Palace and Abba Hotel.

At Gijón’s Botanic Gardens, you can wander in a centennial oak wood –a listed natural monument–, walk in silence through an alder grove or take a stroll through historical gardens dating from the 19th century.

Just across the road, the Universidad Laboral will not leave you unaltered. Originally conceived as a miners’ orphanage when built after the Civil War, the building became the country’s first vocational training university.

Meeting point: Abba Hotel Lobby at 15:45

BLAS CABRERA EXHIBITION

An exhibition about the Spanish and Universal scientist Blas Cabrera (1878-1945) will take place during the Conference at the venue lobby*.

It will be inaugurated on Tuesday 12 at 19:00 by Ron Goldfarb, author of Cabrera’s biography published in IEEE Magnetics Letters.

*Thanks to José M. Barandiarán, José Gómez-Sal, Nuria García, the Universities of Cantabria and Basque Country, BC Materials and Solvay for their kind collaboration and the cession of the panels for the Conference.
